White tanner

White tanner

White tanning is a tanning process in which tanning is carried out with minerals, such as alum or table salt and produces a particularly light, almost white leather.

White tanning was mainly used for finer and thinner leathers from calf, sheep and goats. The resulting leather qualities chevreau (goatskin), ice cream (calfskin) or kid (goatskin) were preferably processed into gloves, pouches, book covers and case covers.

Joseph Hutsteiner’s occupation in Leopoldschlag was white tanner.

Bar- and innkeepers

At least three well known hosts or barkeepers came from our family:

Alois Hutsteiner in Linz, who operated the inn “Gasthaus zur Blauen Donau” in Linz from 1.5.1888

Josef Hutsteiner in Wegscheid, who operated the local inn there.

The “Straubinger Wirt” close to the parish Beutelsbach which was operated by Johann Baptist Hutstein

Mostln 1953 – to the very right it is Franz Hutstein

Also his gransson Franz Hutstein from Unterthannet kept a small tavern business and provided during autumn so called cider (Most). Some guys appeared regularly to meet and drink (see: My grandparents | HUTSTEIN Origins)
